AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS BY THE INDIAN GOVERMENT
 
ARJUNA AWARDS
 
The Arjuna Awards were instituted in 1961. The Government has recently revised the Scheme for Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in sports and games. As per the revised schematic guidelines, to be eligible for the Award, a sportsperson should have had not only good performance consistently for the previous three years at the international level with excellence for the year for which the Award is recommended, but also have shown qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline. The Awardee is given a statuette, a scroll of honour, ceremonial dress and a cash award of Rs. 5 lakhs.
 
From the year 2001, the award is given only in disciplines falling under the following categories:
  1. Olympic Games / Asian Games / Commonwealth Games / World Cup / World Championship
  2. Indigenous Games
  3. Sports for the Physically Challenged

List of Arjuna Awardee shooters

RAJIV GANDHI KHEL RATNA

The scheme was launched in the year 1991-92 with the objective of honouring sports persons to enhance their general status and to give them greater dignity and place of honour in society. Under this scheme, an amount of Rs. 7.5 lakhs is given as award for the most spectacular and outstanding performance in the field of sports by an individual sportsperson or a team.
Shooters who have been awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna:
Abhinav Bindra - 2001, Anjali Bhagwat 2003, Rajyavardhan Rathore 2005, Manavjit Sandhu 2007
DRONACHARYA AWARDS
The Dronacharya Award, instituted in 1985, honours eminent Coaches who have successfully trained sportspersons or teams and enabled them to achieve outstanding results in international completions. The Awardee is given a statuette of Guru Dronacharya, a scroll of honour, ceremonial dress and a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs.
Mr. Sunny Thomas is the only shooting coach to be awarded the Dronacharya Award
