Procedure to import guns and ammunation for shooting sports

The “Renowned Shooters” are entitled to import duty free guns and ammunition for their training and participation in shooting competitions.

“Renowned Shooter”- A shooter who has participated in a National Shooting Championship and has attained the Minimum Qualifying Score prescribed by the Natioanl Rifle Association of India, is declared as “Renowned Shooter”.

The following documents are required for import of gun (except for air rifles/air pistols) and ammunition:

Proforma Invoice from supplier from whom the gun or ammunition is to be imported

Copy of Renowned Shot certificate issued by NRAI

Ayat-Niryat Form – As per DGFT Import Policy (Download)

Import Application (Download)

Affidavit duly attested by Notary

Undertaking duly attested by Notary

Attested copy of Fire Arm Licence stating purchase period and permission to purchase weapon/ammunition

Import Licence Fee - @ Rs. 2/- per 1000/- on CIF Value - a minimum of Rs. 200/- Demand Draft in favour of respective Regional Joint DGFT’s.

A letter addressed to the Secretary General NRAI stating your request and five sets of documents as stated in S.No. 1 to 6 above.

On receipt of application in order, the NRAI will forward the same to the executive director (TEAMS), Sports Authority of India, who, in turn, will send it to the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports for consideration. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will forward the application, along with its recommendations, to DGFT for issue of Import Licence. It takes between one and four months to get an import licence.

Duty Exemption Certificate

The Duty Exemption Certificate (D.E.C.) is issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to “Renowned Shooters” in case a shooter is importing air weapons or on receipt of Import Licence from DGFT. The following documents are to be sent to NRAI for onward submission to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports:

Copy of Performa Invoice

Copy of “Renowned Shot” Certificate issued by NRAI

Copy of Import Licence (in case of Fire arms and ammunition only)

Mention the name of Airport/Post office where the import is to be cleared from customs in the application to NRAI.
