    Pooja Ghatkar narrowly misses out on World Cup medal

    walter_300X79pxPooja Ghatkar finished fourth in the Women 10m Air Rifle in the season first ISSF World Cup in Bangkok on Thursday.

    It was an impressive performance from the 27-year-old Pooja, on a day when five Olympic quota winners, Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, Chain Singh, Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul, could not make the finals in the men and women air rifle events.

    Pooja shot the third highest score of 416.7 to qualify for the finals. However in the finals, Pooja was eliminated in fourth place with a score of 164.0.

    Ayonika Paul shot 413.8 and Apurvi Chandela 413.8 to finish 17th and 18th respectively.

    Olympic champion Yi Siling of China shot 207.7 (420.2) to win the gold, Austria’s Olivia Hofmann clinched the silver while Singapore’s star shooter Jasmine Ser took the bronze.

    In Men 10m Air Rifle, Chain Singh who won six gold medals at the recently held South Asian Games, shot the best among the Indians to finish 10th with a score of 626.3.

    World champion Yang Haoran of China won the gold with a junior final world record of 209.8, after having topped qualification with a score of 632.2. The silver was won by Cao Yifei of China with 207.6 while Hungary’s Istvan Peni shot 186.99 to win the bronze.

    2008 Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra shot 622.7 for the 18th place while 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang shot 617.6 to finish 33rd in a field of 50 shooters.
