    Yashaswini Deswal wins air pistol gold at Junior World Championship

    India’s Yashaswini Deswal asserted her class by winning gold in the Junior Women 10m Air Pistol at the ISSF Junior World Championship in Suhl, Germany on Sunday.

    The 20-year-old, Yashaswini qualified on top with a score of 385 (97,93,97,98) and equalled the world record of 235.9 in the finals to beat Kim Woori of Korea by 4.1 points for the gold.

    Guilia Campostrini of Italy won the bronze in the event.

    Yashaswini struggled in the initial stage of the finals, where she also hit a poor 7.8, which put her in the third position after the first five shots, but the Chandigarh girl recovered very well with some fine shots and went into a comfortable lead.

    Yashaswini had won a silver at the Junior World Cup at the same venue last year and a silver in the Asian Championship at Kuwait in 2014.

    Earlier in the day, Saurabh Chaudhary finished fourth after missing a medal by 0.7 points in the Junior Men’s 10m Air Pistol.

    Saurabh shot 198.0 in his final at this level and lost the bronze to Paolo Monna of Italy, after having shot the second best qualification score of 578.

    Along with Anmol (571) who missed the final by three points, and Arjun Singh Cheema (569), Saurabh was able to get the team bronze, two points behind Korea, with a total of 1718.

    Russia, with a combined score of 1724 won the team gold in the event.

    Boram Choe of Korea won gold with a junior world record of 241.1 ahead of Pavlo Korostylov of Ukraine who won the silver with a score of 239.9. Italy’s Paolo Monna won the bronze with a score of 218.3.
